The most important factor you should consider is the melanin content of your skin – in other words how dark your skin is.

Skin color is expressed in Skin Type categories I to V (i.e. 1 to 5). Skin Type I being the fairest skin, and Skin Type V, the darkest. If you have white skin that does not tan well, you are likely to be Type I or II. Olive skin color is likely Type III and so on.

So what is so critical about selection of the appropriate devices? Laser devices apply energy to the melanin content in the skin and the hair. Darker hair and darker hair have rich melanin content. A laser device designed for lighter skin type aims to attack the higher melanin content in the dark hair, and assumes that the light melanin skin will not absorb the energy.
