FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
WHAT CAUSES HYPERHIDROSIS?
Excessive sweating can be classified into two different categories: primary and secondary Hyperhidrosis. Primary hyperhidrosis typically starts in childhood and there is usually a family history. It is the most common category, but the main cause behind this condition is still fairly unknown. Secondary hyperhidrosis is when the sweating can affect your whole body and is likely caused by an underlying medical condition. Possible causes include obesity, hyperthyroidism, or even menopause. So it is very important to identify the cause of your sweating before seeking any form of treatment to overcome it.
WHAT HAPPENS DURING THE PROCEDURE?
Your hyperhidrosis treatment with Botox will begin with the application of an iodine solution and starch powder to your armpits in order to identify the primary areas with excessive sweat. After that, a series of small injections will be placed into the skin around these areas. The needles are very fine and the amount injected each time is very small. Most patients find the procedure quite tolerable and it only takes less than 30 minutes to have it done.
IS IT SAFE TO GET BOTOX IN THE ARMPITS?
Botox has been FDA-approved for people who sweat excessively from their armpits. It may also be used “off-label” to reduce sweating in other areas, such as the hands, feet, and face. Off-label use refers to using a medication for something other than what it was approved to treat, meaning that Botox hasn’t gone through the same amount of rigorous testing to confirm its effectiveness in these areas of the body.
IS IT EXPENSIVE TO GET BOTOX FOR HYPERHIDROSIS?
TThe cost of Botox injections can vary significantly depending on how many areas you are seeking treatment for, and where you are located. At StudioMD Medical Aesthetics & Wellness Centers we offer complimentary consultations to address your own individual circumstances and set up a treatment plan that suits both your goals and budget. And we currently have a special offer for both underarms: just $950 (100 units)!
HOW LONG WILL THE BOTOX WORK FOR?
Unfortunately, Botox is not a permanent solution for excessive underarm sweating. A single treatment lasts around 4–12 months, so you’ll likely require ongoing injections. But, for most hyperhidrosis patients, Botox does help to stop or significantly reduce the symptoms. Research has been shown that most patients report an 82-87% decrease in sweating.
